What you actually see

The houses

Sixteen small dwellings built directly into the arcade of the northern fortification wall in the 16th century. They are furnished as period interiors: a marksman's home, a seamstress's workshop, a herbalist, a tavern, a goldsmith's bench. The ceilings are low enough that anyone over about 1.85 m will duck.

They were ordinary housing for four centuries. The last residents were moved out in the 1950s — this is not a reconstruction of a lost street but a real one that was still lived in within living memory.

House No. 22 — the Kafka house

The small blue house belonged to Franz Kafka's youngest sister Ottla, who rented it as a quiet place to work. Kafka used it through the winter of 1916–17, walking up from Malá Strana in the evenings to write. It is now a bookshop, and it is the single most photographed doorway in the complex — which is why the first 20 minutes after opening matter so much.

The armoury gallery above

A defensive corridor runs the length of the wall above the houses, lined with historical armour, crossbows, pole weapons and mannequins in full plate. It is included in the same ticket, and a surprising number of visitors miss the staircase entirely. Do not — it is the part children remember.

Daliborka Tower

At the eastern end of the lane, a round artillery tower that served as a prison. Named after Dalibor of Kozojedy, jailed here in 1498, whose story became the subject of a Smetana opera. The cells and the equipment inside are grim in a way the rest of the castle is not.

Ticket comparison: how to get into Golden Lane

The free hour: walking Golden Lane after closing

When the monuments shut — 17:00 in summer, 16:00 in winter — the houses are locked and the armoury gallery closes. The lane itself is then opened for free passage, and the castle grounds stay open until 22:00.

• You can walk the full length of the lane and photograph the houses from outside with nobody in the frame.
• Nothing is open: no interiors, no armoury, no Daliborka, no bookshop in No. 22.
• Summer evenings are the best version of this — long light, warm stone, empty street.
• It is a genuine option if the 450 CZK ticket is out of budget. Combine it with the free courtyards, the cathedral exterior and the Deer Moat path for a good two hours at no cost.

Timing is everything: the twenty minutes that matter

Golden Lane is about two metres wide with sixteen doorways opening off it. There is no version of this street that works at 11:30 in July.

• 9:00–9:20 — the lane at opening. The only window in which the classic photograph of empty painted houses is possible.
• 10:30–14:00 — a single-file shuffle. You will queue to enter individual houses and you will photograph other visitors.
• After 15:30 — groups leave and the flow thins noticeably.
• After closing, until 22:00 — free, empty, and the best light of the day in summer.
• November to February — quiet at almost any hour, though the 16:00 close comes fast.

How to arrive at 9:00

Most visitors enter the castle from the west and walk east, reaching Golden Lane around 11:00 at maximum density. Reverse it: come up the Old Castle Stairs from metro Malostranská to the Na Opyši gate at the eastern end, and Golden Lane is your first stop rather than your last.

Best light for photographs

• The painted façades need soft light — early morning or overcast, not midday sun which blows out the ochre and blue
• No. 22 is best photographed straight on from the lane, and only before 9:30
• The armoury gallery is dim; steady your camera on the sill rather than raising ISO
• Evening, after closing — long shadows down the lane and nobody in them

The insider entry: reaching Golden Lane first

1. Take metro line A to MalostranskáThe eastern approach. From the station it is 100 m to the foot of the Old Castle Stairs.
2. Climb the Old Castle Stairs to the Na Opyši gateAbout 10 minutes and 150 steps, with a view over Malá Strana that improves the whole way up. Security here is usually quick.
3. Golden Lane is immediately insideThe eastern gate puts you beside the Black Tower and Daliborka. There is a ticket window at Golden Lane itself if you do not already hold one.
4. Then walk the circuit in reverseBasilica, Old Royal Palace, cathedral — permanently against the main flow, which is entering from the west at the same time.

How to save

• Reduced admission — 300 CZK — for ages 6–16, full-time students up to and including 26, and adults 65 and over. Proof is checked at the door.
• Family ticket — 950 CZK — one to five children under 16 with up to two adults. Golden Lane is the part children like most, which makes the family rate easy to justify.
• Children under 6 enter free.
• Walk the lane free after closing if the interiors are not essential to you.
• Do not rent the audio guide at 350 CZK plus a 500 CZK deposit — online bundles with app-based audio usually cost less in total.
